08/07/2008: "Good Memories of Hawaii"

In the Summer of '06, we took a family trip to Hawaii with Alex, Nick and our niece, Sierra. It was a blast, although a lot of time was spent on a divide and conquer basis so that certain activities could be done while one of us took care of Alex. I still think about Rock's positive attitude in including Alex in whatever we could, however difficult it was to manage. We had rented a house in the North Shore so it was much easier than cramming everyone into a hotel room.

This Summer, my stepmom Cissy offered her house in Oahu while she goes on a cruise. So here we are, Nick, Sierra and I, camping out in Hawaii Kai. Each time we do an activity I think how nice it would be if Rock were here. Hanauma Bay snorkeling yesterday, and I'm taking the kids to surf lessons later today. We went to Sandy Beach yesterday, and I was wishing for Rock, to ride waves with Nick for much longer than I wanted to. I am melancholy about not getting to take Alex although it allows us tons more freedom - but even more I miss Rock and his everlasting motivation to lead us to lots of fun. We stopped at a restaurant yesterday, and Sierra remembered that Rock had bought her a souvenir while we ate at the shop next door. Such a thoughtful person - the longer he's gone the more I appreciate him!

Hello Jeanette,
I am so glad to see an entry from you. I think of Doug and you guys often. I hope that life is treating you kindly and embracing you with compassion. I enjoyed finally meeting you and completely understood Doug's attraction and love for you as soon as we met. I am glad to hear from you and did not expect to see any entries. Thank you for continuing to enter on his blog in some way it keeps the connection. I'm glad you and Nick got to go to Hawaii but of course I can understand the feelings of missing Doug. I hope things will soften with time. Please continue to share your thoughts and know that there are people who continue to care and think of you and your family
often. Please take care of yourself.

Hello Jeanette, I am happy to see an update on you and the kids. I have never met you, but I have heard so much wonderful things about you from Doug, during my chemo treatment at John muir back in 2005. I too check on Doug's blog periodically, and feel that he is still with us in our hearts. Take care Jeanette and keep us posted.

Hello Jeanette

As I read your last line in your post, I could not help but think Doug is not gone but lives in all of us. He lives in you and your children, his family and his friends Often, I hear Doug telling me; Mike does not matter if you have the latest technology if your curriculum is crap.

Doug has inspired me in another way. I am currently training for a triathlon. I just returned home from swimming a 1/1 mile. As some of you may know I received a kidney transplant 15 years ago and so I am doing the "easy" triathlon (500 meter swim, 12 mile bike and 5k run) to raise awareness for organ donation and to remember Doug. I would encourage all of you to honor your memories of Doug in your own way and if any of you are near Travis AFB on July 25 any well wishers are welcome or anyone want to join me you are also welcome.

Peace, the above link should take you to a picture of Doug and I when he and Jeanette and family were here in Brussels. Like all of you, I miss him too.

Mike

As like Mia, I still periodically check the blog too. I like to re-read Doug's entries. It just reminds me, that he really is still with us in many ways. It was nice to see you posted. I am glad you have wonderful memories with Doug, and you and Nick are creating new ones. Please know that you, Nick and Alex are always in my thoughts and I am always hoping you are finding peace and happiness!

I still check Rock's blog periodically and was happy to see an update on you and the kids today. It must be difficult retracing your steps without him but how wonderful to have lasting memories.
