05/03/2006: "Addicted"
I never have considered myself to be one with an addictive personality. I have tried many things but found it easy to stop. (Jeanette will claim I am addicted to buying jackets, but that is more of a fetish and a whole different topic.) For a full week and a half, I have gone without. OK, I snuck a meager brief taste or tease here and there. So now I am confessing that I have a serious affliction (besides the “touch” of cancer).
I am addicted to the Internet. I crave everything about it!
I need to be on email, following what is happening at work and with friends and family. I need to get my RSS news feeds so I can read the latest on my interests. I need to have the Web’s library of information at my fingertips so I can research and read on any topic there is. I want to be able to go through image libraries. Now that I Blog, I have found that I even need to do that! I lay in this hospital bed at night and think, “I have to write that down.” And finally, I need to shop. Don’t you just love shopping with the Internet? I can research items, compare prices, purchase quickly, so addicting!
So my wonderful wife Jeanette, FedExed (verb) my laptop to my dad’s hotel in San Diego, and it arrived in my room this morning. All is well in the world and I am healed. God bless.

Hi Rock ,
I have been thinking about you and get little bits about whats going on. I am so proud of you I hope this new treatment helps out. You are a guiding force that never quits. Collen just told me about your website today. If you don't mind I would like to pass it along to Jim & Sarah , Sandy . Stacey , Debbie , Ken , Grace & Helen . I will wait a day or two because rumor has it you will be home on Friday. Please let me know if this is ok. A quick note on the Roesling side of the family....I had A.J this weekend...can you believe he is already 3 months old. Jim and Sarah were painting the apartment again and did not want him there. Oh my god how kids change... He is 11 lbs. and has 3 chins..This is weird but Paige Karly and I think he looks like Nick.. I know Nick looks like Prouty but there is a strange resemblence . Jim thinks he looks like BOB..He is a Roesling you should see the size of his head.
Of course Jim says taht his brains are so big he needs more room. I am trying to get your wife out for a night in the city to go see the play MENAPOUSE it had great reviews ...The gorls are doing well...Karly is playing softball and appears to be a natural..Of course swim team practice has started and they are both in the 9/10 so for the first time they are swimming together ... Karlys up year Paiges down year ...we will see how it goes ...It is their favorite sport ..
Anyway all for now hope to hear from you soon

Doug ...
Nothing surprising about your addiction. Being connected to everything is important -- especially when you are far away. Hooray for Jeanette for getting your laptop into your hands.
Sending positive thoughts across the miles to you.

I'm just so shocked you are addicted to the Net! I just did a new comment on the previous blog and find myself wanting to make more comments on this blog of the day! When do you start podcasting or desktop videoconferencing from the hospital? You could download that Polycom PVX software and use it for a week with a webcam. Heck, I used mine last week but forgot I was in a robe, but thank goodness it was flannel and buttoned up.
Miss you - I had Giants tickets but no takers.

So...you have an Internet "jones." I for one am glad as it gives us a way to stay abreast of your progress. I also have an addiction. That being an addiction to know what is happening with you! I am so relieved that what you wrote, more importantly the tone of what you wrote, indicates you must be feeling better. Kinda like when people become grumpy and complain, that's when you know they're feeling better. So, now that you're complaining, it's plain to see that good things are happening! We all miss ya and are anxiously awaiting your healthy return! ~ko

Hi Doug!
Talk about addiction, I am not only addicted to the internet, but to your Blog!!! I check it every day, sometimes twice a day. Did he post today? It is like a research project for me. Every time you write about this new herb, alternative therapy, or drug you are experiencing, I immediately have my new research project!
I have learned so much!
Anyway it was totally awesome to hear news from you! Please always remember you are in all our thoughts and prayers...And can we have a big halleluiah for God (or Al Gore in some minds
) for the Internet!!
Love,
Deb
